This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with a CLC on key human rights issues, collaborating with civil society organisations and community stakeholders. You will contribute to important legal research, policy reform efforts, and advocacy that drive social change. The role is a key part of Wotton Kearney’s ongoing commitment to meaningful pro bono work.

Key Responsibilities

As a Pro Bono Secondment Solicitor, you wil represent the Firm on secondment with our Partner human rights community legal centre, upholding Wotton Kearney’s commitment to pro bono legal work as a core part of professional responsibility, providing pro bono legal support which may include:

  • Conducting high-quality legal research across key areas such as First Nations justice, migration justice, democratic freedoms, corporate accountability, whistleblower protections, climate justice, reproductive rights, and human rights law.
  • Contributing to law reform efforts by identifying systemic legal issues and proposing legislative or policy changes.
  • Engaging with civil society organisations and community stakeholders to ensure reform efforts are informed by lived experience and community needs.
  • Assisting the CLC with drafting policy submissions, law reform proposals, and briefing papers for parliamentary and public consultation processes.
  • Participating in team meetings, training sessions, and contributing to internal resources and toolkits.

The Successful Candidate

  • Qualified solicitor with 1–2 years of post-admission experience.
  • Experience gained in either a community legal centre, legal clinic, or private practice.
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights law, social justice, or law reform.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear and persuasive legal documents.
  • Experience working with vulnerable clients or on pro bono matters is highly regarded.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-organisational environment and manage competing priorities with professionalism and empathy.
