The Pro Bono Coordinator plays a key role in advancing LASSB’s mission by supporting and strengthening our pro bono programs. This position focuses on recruiting, training, and assisting volunteer attorneys and law students so they can effectively serve low-income individuals and families. The ideal candidate is collaborative, well-organized, and passionate about expanding access to justice through high-quality volunteer engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and coordinate strategies to recruit, train, and retain volunteer attorneys, law firms, law students, and community partners.
- Maintain up-to-date pro bono policies, procedures, and workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality services.
- Build and maintain relationships with law firms, bar associations, courts, law schools, and community organizations.
- Coordinate pro bono case placement, including screening cases, preparing case summaries, and matching volunteers based on skills and availability.
- Assist in planning and implementing pro bono trainings, CLEs, clinics, and outreach events.
- Provide ongoing support to volunteers, helping them navigate forms, procedures, and available resources.
- Track and maintain data on volunteer hours, participation, case outcomes, and clinic activity.
- Prepare regular reports for leadership and development staff, including data for grant applications and reporting.
- Assist in coordinating LASSB’s Summer Legal Fellows Program, including recruitment, onboarding, and scheduling.
- Help identify partnership opportunities and support special pro bono-driven initiatives as they arise.
The Successful Candidate
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school preferred; active California Bar membership preferred but not required.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in legal services, volunteer coordination, pro bono management, or a related field.
- Experience recruiting, managing, or supporting volunteers.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with attorneys, firms, partners, students, and community groups.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations and improving access to justice.
