The staff attorney for the Pro Bono Litigation Clinic is responsible for assisting the Director in teaching law and litigation in the Pro Bono Litigation Clinic at UIC Law. Further, the position supervises law students in the Clinic as a matriculated graded course. The attorney also handles cases and will be responsible for all aspects of prosecuting and managing those matters. Additionally, the attorney assists with office management, education and outreach and training initiatives as directed.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Investigate and litigate cases on behalf of clients, including appeals, in state and federal court and the various administrative venues in the Chicago metropolitan area.
  • Supervise clinic interns in their handling of cases including court appearances, depositions, file management, gathering of evidence, conducting interviews and research and drafting documents.
  • Assist with teaching the weekly clinic class as directed from time to time.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel.
  • Assist as directed with office management including preparing reports, grant application(s) and management, conferences, trainings, the Clinic's testing program, case development, education and outreach and other business of the office.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

The Successful Candidate

  • Juris Doctor from ABA approved Law School.
  • Licensure in Illinois including admission to the federal court.
  • Basic knowledge of state, federal and local laws and civil procedure including federal court and local administrative venues.
  • Excellent legal research and drafting skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; good interpersonal skills, basic computer skills.
  • Have been admitted to practice law in Illinois or able to be licensed in Illinois.
