Reporting to the Executive Director, the Pro Bono Manager leads the design, development, and day-to-day operations of LAM’s pro bono program. The Pro Bono Manager recruits volunteers, facilitates the placement of pro bono cases and matters with pro bono counsel, fields requests from LAM Staff for client and mission-related pro bono support, and designs and coordinates legal clinics. The Pro Bono Manager develops partnerships with law firms, corporations, law schools, colleges, bar associations, and other mission-aligned organizations to increase Marin residents’ access to civil justice. The Pro Bono Manager serves as an ambassador to the statewide legal services sector, the private legal sector, community-based organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and statewide pro bono networks, among others. The goal of this position is to increase LAM’s internal capacity and community impact by building relationships and stewarding volunteers to deliver legal services that are responsive to emergent community needs.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, sustain, and expand relationships with lawyers, law firms, corporations, bar associations, law schools, and colleges to advance LAM’s mission and vision, with an emphasis on expanding access to immigration legal services for marginalized Marin residents in anticipation of LAM’s forthcoming immigration law program.
- Actively recruit, coordinate training, mentor, retain, and support volunteer attorneys, interpreters, and other individuals to provide legal services and resources through LAM’s pro bono program, with an emphasis on immigration law.
- Under the supervision of the Executive Director, develop and implement new pro bono initiatives with lawyers, law firms, corporate counsel, government agencies, and law schools, with an emphasis on expanding access to immigration legal services in anticipation of LAM’s forthcoming immigration law program.
- Direct the placement of all pro bono cases and coordinate organizational resources to ensure high quality legal services.
- Partner with other legal and social services organizations on projects related to pro bono services and access to justice, with an emphasis on immigration legal services in anticipation of LAM’s forthcoming immigration law program.
- Represent and promote LAM at events, convenings, and conferences organized by funders, counterparts, government agencies, law firms, and stakeholders.
- Ensure program compliance with all applicable laws and with restrictions required by all funders and pro bono counsel.
- Track, implement, and communicate trends, initiatives, and best practices as they relate to pro bono services and access to justice.
- Under the supervision of the Executive Director, manage the administration, tracking, evaluation, and reporting of all LAM pro bono activities.
- Collaborate and connect with the broader network of community-based organizations and legal services providers to address regional gaps in services, explore areas for expansion, and make successful referrals to organizations beyond Marin County.
- In close consultation with the Executive Director, establish and implement the long-range goals, strategies, and policies furthering LAM’s pro bono initiatives as they relate to arising community need.
- Collaborate with LAM Staff and Management to secure case referrals and operate clinics that increase organizational capacity to assist as many marginalized Marin residents as possible.
- Support the Legal Director, Director of Programs, Director of Policy, Business Manager, and other Staff by leveraging pro bono resources to address service gaps and increase organizational capacity.
- With oversight by the Legal Director, provide legal representation to clients in immigration proceedings where pro bono referral is not possible and in-house representation is necessary to ensure high-quality and responsive immigration legal services.
- Maintain, track, and gather data in line with requirements set forth by organizational leadership.
- Prepare reports, narrative, and other written materials to support funder compliance, program sustainability, and development.
- Additional mission-aligned tasks as required by organizational leadership.
The Successful Candidate
- Commitment to the mission and vision of Legal Aid of Marin.
- License to practice law in any U.S. state (California highly preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience practicing immigration law.
- Experience mentoring pro bono attorney volunteers.
- Ability to work productively and collaboratively with individuals from varied backgrounds in a close-knit organization committed to equity and impact.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to accept feedback and address areas for professional growth.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and partner with diverse stakeholders, including law firms, academic institutions, government agencies, volunteers, clients, and community- based organizations.
- Enthusiasm for pro bono engagement and serving as an ambassador for LAM throughout the County, region, and State.
- Knowledge, understanding, and adherence to the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to accurately perform detailed work.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- Ability to multi-task, be proactive, manage up, and work independently.
- Flexibility in meeting organizational challenges by using collaborative problem-solving methods and shifting resources when necessary.
- Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite and the ability to input, gather, and report data using LAM’s database platforms.
- Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed to carry out the responsibilities of this position and promote LAM’s mission and vision.
- Valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and car insurance.
- Spanish fluency (both written and oral) strongly preferred.
