The Pro Bono Coordinator shall report to the Pro Bono Managing Attorney and is responsible for implementing various pro bono initiatives and activities. This includes collaborating with NLS managers, attorneys, and support staff in all four counties of the NLS service area; supporting and contributing to the development of new and innovative volunteer opportunities, projects, and programs for volunteer attorneys and law students; and assisting with the coordination of training and pro bono legal advice clinics and other projects. This position will be responsive to the Managing Attorney of Project Management for reporting and data documentation as required.
Key responsibilities
- Support the Pro Bono Manager in developing a Pro Bono Program that includes developing a vision and strategy for enhancing pro bono service delivery for NLS, including recruitment, case referral system, training program, resource library, volunteer opportunities, and all other program elements.
- Collaborate with Pro Bono Manager and NLS’s Intake Unit to: identify and screen calls for pro bono representation and case placement, including triage calls, determine client eligibility, conduct basic legal research, and evaluate cases for pro bono suitability and referral.
- Develop and publish resources and training materials, including fillable forms, for pro bono projects, clinics, and training events. Set up and maintain web-based pro bono resource library. Make on-demand edits to and build out section of content in online library. Using samples and templates, create practice aids including infographics and fillable web-forms and PDF documents, while coordinating with attorneys for substantive content.
- Gather data, compile information and prepare reports to the Board of Directors, funders, as well as for public facing materials (i.e. newsletters, websites, etc.).
- Contribute to the development and operation of pro bono programming with NLS staff, and under the supervision of the Pro Bono Manager, including:
- Maintain and update online resource library for different counties and substantive areas
- Pro bono case assignment, support to volunteer attorneys, managing pro bono case assignments
- Pro bono attorney recruitment programming and activities
- Develop, maintain, and update forms for pro bono case referral packet
- Develop, summarize, report on surveys to pro bono attorneys, clients, and other stakeholder
- Assist in the development, execution, reporting, and follow up of trainings, including CLE trainings and community outreach events, related to pro bono programs and initiatives. Assist with CLE registration, report credits to CLE board, coordinate event and public promotion with local bar associations and other internal and external partners. Responsible for event logistics including: online event registration, presenters, staffing, technology, materials/handouts, and refreshments.
- Organize and participate in volunteer attorney recognition efforts including recognition activities.
- Collaborate in the continuous development of relationships with individual attorneys, law firms, solo practitioners, law schools, bar associations, parallel and partner pro bono groups, especially as it relates to recruiting and retaining volunteers. Maintain volunteer database, listservs, etc.
- Complete administrative tasks that include entering case notes and time in NLS case management system, maintaining systems for tracking volunteer attorney data and case management, and prepare correspondence and documents to assist volunteers in the representation of clients. Respond to volunteer inquiries and refer to appropriate NLS attorney or staff for case questions, case management, and case closure. Follow up with volunteer attorneys to ascertain case status, update case status in Legal Server, and ensure timely case closure for pro bono cases. Responsible for intensive case coordination.
- Collaborate with Intake and Pro Bono Manager in creating systems for identifying new cases for pro bono referrals.
- Develop knowledge of relevant law and community referral resources through training, continuing legal education courses, and other educational opportunities; explain legal information to clients.

The Successful Candidate
- Excellent communication skills required to work with clients, attorneys, and the general public.
- Strong organizational skills, high level of attention to detail, creative problem solving, and ability to balance demands of multiple projects.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment in implementing established policies and procedures, and maintaining confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed in task completion and problem-solving.
- Knowledge of legal terminology, procedures and processes, or ability and motivation to learn
- Minimum of an associate degree or paralegal certificate, or commensurate experience.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a program coordinator or paralegal preferred, or related experience and/or training.
- Advanced proficiency and experience in computer technology, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), PDF and web-based form development tools case management systems, and database activity with a high level of accuracy. Skilled with WordPress or other web-based Content Management System (CMS) and other website content management tools. Graphic design a plus (Canva, Adobe Suite).
- Previous experience in areas of poverty law is preferred but not required.
- Experience with website content management and database report generation.
- Current drivers’ license and ability to travel in 4-county service area.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
