Working alongside the Practical Support Services team, the key purpose of the Pro Bono Coordinator is to coordinate the delivery of pro bono legal, financial planning and workplace professional services for people affected by cancer. This support is delivered by partnering with external pro bono partners across the country to provide free advice to patients and carers when they cannot afford to access this.
This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract based at our Woolloomooloo office, offered under a hybrid working model.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee case management of clients referred to Cancer Council’s Legal, Financial Planning and Workplace Referral Services, including:
- Contact cancer patients and carers over the phone to determine their eligibility for pro bono advice.
- Identify clients’ legal, financial and workplace issues and determine appropriate solutions.
- Connect clients with pro bono service providers in order to receive free advice and support.
- Establish and manage relationships with pro bono professional service providers, including lawyers, financial planners and HR/recruitment professionals across the country, to ensure engagement in the service and the provision of high-quality support to clients.
- Establish relationships with referring healthcare professionals to increase referrer education and awareness of the services available to ensure high quality and appropriate referrals.
- Oversee a cohort of law student or other volunteers who support the delivery of the services, including leading on day-to-day supervision and workflow management, and supporting the Team Leader, Legal & Financial Referral Services with volunteer recruitment, training and onboarding, and ongoing learning and development.
- In collaboration with the Manager, Practical Support Services and Team Leader, Legal & Financial Referral Services contribute to projects and evaluations that improve the delivery and impact of the service.
- Assist with promotional requests for the service including presenting to internal or external stakeholders.
The Successful Candidate
Essential:
- A tertiary qualification in law or relevant field.
- One to two years’ experience coordinating pro bono or support services or other legal-related experience.
- High level written and oral communication skills.
- Skills and experience in communicating with vulnerable clients.
- Capacity to take initiative, problem solve and manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated relationship management skills and ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders (both internally and externally).
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
Desirable:
- Experience in not-for-profit or pro bono sector.
- Basic knowledge of or interest in oncology, cancer services and the needs of persons affected by cancer
