The Director of Pro Bono and Inclusion Programs will lead the execution of the Firm’s inclusion and pro bono efforts and related strategic planning. Responsibilities include maintaining existing programs and the initiation of new programs to reinforce an inclusive culture and pro bono participation. In a firm-wide capacity, this role will promote awareness of inclusion and pro bono programming internally, to legal practitioners and business professionals, and externally.
Key Responsibilities
Diversity and Inclusion Program
- Leads all inclusion efforts for both legal practitioners and business professionals. This includes strategic planning and implementation, establishing best practices across the Firm, and the development and implementation of programs and events.
- Serves as an advisor to Firm management in the areas of diversity and inclusion, and interacts with the Executive Committee, other pertinent committees, and/or other senior leaders.
- As a member of the Diversity Committee, collaborates with committee on any programming initiatives. Independently works towards the creation and implementation of programming into the Firm’s on-going business development and strategic planning processes.
- Works with existing talent management teams to create programs that are designed to enhance inclusive hiring efforts.
- Reviews internal operational policies and procedures to identify areas that need improvement in alignment with diversity and inclusion efforts. Works closely with departments to implement changes.
- Influences progress through the implementation and coordination of internal training and educational programs for both legal practitioners and business professionals.
- Manages community outreach programs designed to enhance the diversity and inclusion Firm opportunities (Scholarship/Internship Program, Mentoring/Buddy Programs).
- Manages all efforts related to firm Legal Affinity Groups or any other assigned or facilitated groups that promote inclusion across the Firm.
- Works closely with the Client Services Department to coordinate client-facing diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives that support the Firm’s client outreach, business development, marketing strategies, and alumni outreach efforts.
- Maintains and curates’ diversity related data and upon request shares pertinent information for RFP’s, surveys, or other business reasons. Establishes, organizes, and maintains all statistical data relating to diversity and tracks all current and historical data.
- Attends related conferences, meetings and other external programs to learn about new best practices within the diversity and inclusion landscape and proposes and implements continuous improvements to Firm initiatives.
- With extensive experience, ensures compliance with applicable Federal / State laws, policies, and procedures (e.g., Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other applicable laws).
Pro Bono Program
- Manages all pro bono efforts for both legal practitioners and business professionals in a firm-wide capacity. Oversees the process from start to finish under the direction of the Pro Bono Equity Shareholder and Senior Director of LRPD.
- Manages the administration and day-to-day activities related to ensuring program success. This may include but not be limited to opening new matters, facilitating conflict checks, and ensuring appropriate team staffing and composition.
- Manages relations pertaining to both internal and external contacts. Maintains contact with the Firm’s public interest organizations and drives engagement with them internally. Facilitates new relationships and partnerships provided there is alignment with Firm priorities and objectives.
- Manages all expenditures and budgeting for pro bono efforts and collaborates with other departments to track cost benefit analysis.
- Champions pro bono program both internally and externally by ensuring program details are prominently and clearly presented via the Firm’s intranet page. Applies sound presentation and communication capabilities to promote program participation.
- Aligns Firm policies and procedures to ensure pro bono participation fits into other related efforts and supports the Firm’s core values.
- Works closely with Client Services pertaining to data needed for RFPs.
- Closely monitors pro-bono related reporting to monitor hour utilization and participation and collaborates regularly with Legal Recruiting & Professional Development on staffing and ensuring compliance with hours policies and individual targets.
The Successful Candidate
- Law degree along with 5 years of practice experience. Some management-related experience including a proven commitment towards inclusion and pro bono efforts at prior firms.
- Extensive experience planning, designing and delivering programs, events, and implementing best practices related to diversity and inclusion issues in a complex, consensus-driven environment.
- Ability to counsel legal practitioners, business professionals, and management, demonstrating confidentiality, tact, and resourcefulness.
- Demonstrated knowledge of diversity and inclusion and pro bono best practices in law firm or professional services environments.
- A strong presence that instills confidence and understanding of key issues in the diversity and inclusion and pro bono legal community.
- Equipped with the interpersonal skills to build lasting relationships and drive consensus; evidenced ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, legal practitioners, and business professionals.
- Strong organizational and project management and strategic planning abilities with a high degree of attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
- Strong technical skills with all MS Office Suite products and the ability to analyze and report on data.
