Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Pro Bono Unit located in downtown Atlanta. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income people in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. The Pro Bono Unit is currently comprised of a managing attorney and two full-time paralegals. The staff in this unit manage pro bono projects in our five-county service area and provide support and strategic planning for all pro bono staff at Legal Aid.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Pro Bono Unit Staff Attorney will engage in a range of activities including coordinating our Gender-Affirming Name Change Project; 
  • advocacy; 
  • relationship-building; 
  • developing limited scope pro bono opportunities; 
  • developing materials to promote projects; 
  • recruiting, training, placing cases with, providing substantive support to, and managing volunteer attorneys; 
  • networking with private attorneys; 
  • and other related responsibilities. 
  • Travel to and remote work in our other offices located throughout metro Atlanta is required.

The Successful Candidate

  • a Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next Georgia bar exam
  • at least three years of experience litigating in various legal forums 
  • excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills
  • strong communication and listening skills
  • a strong work ethic
  • the ability to adapt to changing work pressures
  • the ability to work in a team and alone
  • appreciation of diverse staff and clients
  • Previous work promoting pro bono with a law firm or legal services organization
  • a demonstrated commitment to public service
  • participation in law school clinics and pro bono projects
  • familiarity with poverty law
  • previous work with low-income people
  • proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued
